Crushing on kale

We’re always about making those little changes to our daily habits that will make a big impact. Whether that’s getting out and a bit more (yes please!), drinking more water (does a cuppa count?) or getting some extra zzzz’s (bring on that afternoon nap!).

One thing we always stick to is getting more colour on the plate with our fruit and vegetables, and whatever the season we try our best to keep it British. It’s just what we’re all about.

We’re always surprised by  the abundance of British grown fruit and veg that is available all year round and take full advantage. And our current crush (you’ve guessed it!) is Kale. Flat or curly, dark green or purple, we’re all over it!

Always hailed as a superfood, we’re on board because this leafy veggie is so nutrient-dense.  With B vitamins that are needed for energy and forming healthy blood cells, it’s also packed with Vitamins C and E which are important antioxidants needed to support the immune system. Very much needed when the coughs and colds are doing the rounds! Vitamin K is its most well-known benefit which we need to help wounds heal properly.

Kale also contains most of the everyday minerals we need, including potassium to support a healthy heart function, calcium for strong bones and teeth, magnesium for good hormone health and selenium to support our immune systems.

Just a handful of kale can make a big difference to a healthy balanced diet, and if you cook with it along with our cold pressed rapeseed oil the benefits are even greater! Our oil has good levels of Omega 3 which is an essential fatty acid that helps with heart health, important for growth in children and helps prevent our blood from clotting. We’re also packed with Vitamin E – again supporting a healthy immune system. It’s our very own superhero.

We like to pop a handful or two of kale into a Stir Fry – just add it near the end so it’s just wilted, and it will retain all the texture and flavour! Our Spicy Stir Fry Oil gives it an extra kIck of flavour packed with ginger, chilli and garlic. We love it!

Another quick cooking idea is to toss the kale in our natural oil, season lightly and roast in a hot oven for a couple of minutes and it’s done! Feel free to use it in salads, soups or get on the grain bowl trend and toss a little in your bowl too.

We’d love you to share how you add good old British seasonal fruit and veg in your meals and we promise we’ll do the same! Find us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Just tag us in.
