How do ya like them apples?

Apple season is here

Apple season is upon us so we thought it was about time we dedicated a blog to this humble and delicious fruit. Why do apples taste so great? What makes apples a healthy choice? and most importantly what are the best things to cook using apples? Want to find out? Read on…

British apples are the best tasting in the world. And it’s all down to the mild climate. Regular rainfall helps to produce a juicy apple, cooler temperatures bring a crunchy texture and a dash of British sunshine develops that distinctive, delicious flavour.

A mild spring and hot dry summer has meant that the UK apple season started earlier this year and it was been reported that apples from this year’s harvest could be even sweeter than that of previous years. This is great news for apple lovers like us and the perfect time to share a few of our fun apple facts courtesy of British Apples & Pears and our favourite apple recipes.

Apple facts

Apples are naturally free from saturated fat

·         Around 122,000 tonnes of British apples are consumed a year – that’s enough to fill 325 Olympic swimming pools!

·         An apple eaten with its peel provides 13% more vitamin C, 10% more vitamin B6, 27% more vitamin K, 16% more potassium, and 46% more fibre than when it’s peeled. (So don’t peel your apples!)

·         There is such a strong demand for British home grown apples that only around 3% of our crop is exported out of the UK.
