Five top facts about rapeseed.

We’ve been growing rapeseed on our farm for a lot years now and we like to think we’re experts on the subject. We’ve learnt a lot about the crop and the beautiful oil it produces, so we’ve thought we’d share our top 5 facts and figures about rapeseed that you might not know.

Our top 5 facts and figures

1.      It takes 1.4kg of rapeseed to make one 500ml bottle of Littleseed British Extra Virgin Rapeseed Oil. That’s about 700 bottles for every tonne of rapeseed.

2.      Our rapeseed oil press takes 10 hours to press a tonne of seed. That means it takes around 90 seconds to press enough oil to fill a 500ml bottle.

3.      Rapeseed is also known as Brassica napus. It is part of the same plant family as cabbage, mustard, broccoli and cauliflower.

4.      Some other names for rapeseed include canola, rape kale, swede rape, Swedish turnip and Siberian kale.

5.      Rapeseed produces large amounts of nectar, particularly loved by the honeybees. The resulting honey is light-coloured with a mild peppery flavour.
